Mold Remediation Companies - House Information

Recent verdicts in favor of mold remediation companies who have been targeted by homeowners seeking compensation for mold-related illnesses and property damages are validating what we've been saying all along: we're here to help.

No doubt, mold causes a great deal of damage and poses a health threat, especially to those with weak immune systems and allergies. However, mold remediation companies come in after the fact. Our first priority is to come into the home and remove the hazard - a hazard that is already present in the home. From there, we dry out the home and search for, and address, the moisture source. Next structural repairs such as replacing carpets and drywall take place.

As a nationwide network of water damage and mold restoration companies, we understand the health concerns surrounding mold. We also have seen firsthand how devastating mold infestations can be to the structure itself. Mold is indeed nasty stuff. Removing the mold and restoring the structure can also be quite costly. Not only must you remove the water and dry out the home, you must also remove the mold-infested building materials and then replace them. Depending on the extent of the damage, mold remediation bills can quickly climb. To make matters worse, not all mold damage is covered by insurance. In fact, many policies specifically exclude mold claims.

What we've observed by watching these trials is that more and more homeowners are going after the mold remediation companies. Not only has it been historically difficult to prove mold sickness and convince insurance companies to pay for mold-related damages, many homeowners are unwilling to take responsibility for paying the bills. In a quest for some sort of compensation, some have turned on those who are trying to help.

However, going after the mold remediation companies is often akin to shooting the messenger. Companies that specialize in remediating mold and restoring the home's health come into the home, thoroughly inspect it for excessive moisture and mold, and explain to the homeowner, "You've got mold." Many times, the homeowner already knows that they have mold and contact the mold remediation company for help in getting rid of it.

When an insurance company denies a mold-related claim, what's a homeowner to do when it comes to paying for much-needed mold remediation services? If the insurance company won't pay, options may be available. First, don't panic. Talk to the company who is performing the repairs and see if the mold remediation company can help with financing or point you to other resources. Talk to your insurance company and see if you can work out a better arrangement. Consider consulting with a public insurance adjuster that specializes in water damage and mold claims. And remember, the mold restoration company is here to help you combat the current health hazard - they didn't cause it.

Things to Consider When Building a Second Floor Addition

Building a second floor addition onto a single story home has become a very popular option for home owners looking for additional living space without the hassle of uprooting their family. However, you should keep in mind that building any home addition is a major enterprise and that building a second story is not a simple undertaking. Here are a few things to consider.

Verify the local zoning laws of your neighborhood. Some zoning laws restrict the construction of second floor addition because it will impact the aesthetics of the neighborhood or create other issues to adjacent properties.

Local building codes should also be examined to ensure that a second floor addition onto an existing single story home is allowed. One thing to consider is the home's existing foundation. In order to determine if the foundation can support a second floor, you will need to enlist the help of a building inspector, foundation contractor or an architect who will examine the existing foundation. Adding a second story onto a ranch style home will create significantly more load on the concrete footing and the foundation walls. The footings and foundation walls are typically built wider and stronger for two story homes which means that you will most likely need to reinforce your existing foundation.

Before removing the roof of your home, you will need to plan for potential obstacles that will need to be addressed. For example:

- What is the size of the ceiling joists? Can they support a second floor?

- Are there mechanical elements such as plumbing, electrical and HVAC running on the top of existing ceiling joists?

- Are there any utilities attached to the existing roof and how much overhang does it have?

- Is the roof sheeting made of plywood or 1x boards?

- How many layers of shingles are on the existing roof?

- Are there any stacks or flues protruding through the roof such as vent pipes, fireplace chimney or furnace flue?

The mechanical infrastructure of your home will also need to be carefully examined. Elements such as the heating, plumbing and electrical will need to be upgraded and modified to support the second story addition. Typically, a larger furnace and electrical panel will need to be installed.

There may be some repair costs associated with your second story addition. Although your contractor will make every effort to ensure that the integrity of the main floor is maintained, inherently there are risks of damage to the first floor's walls and ceilings. This type of damage frequently occurs while the roof is being removed and while the second floor addition is being constructed.

The cost of building a second story addition onto a single story home is relatively expensive on a cost per square foot basis. Typically, there is a 30 to 50% premium for adding a second story over the standard construction costs per square foot. However, the alternative of selling your home and buying a new one is, in most case, a more expensive alternative. Keep in mind that you may be able to tap into your home equity or take out a home renovation loans to cover the costs of your second story addition, making your dream of a larger home a reality.

Your Options on Concrete Slab Repair

Concrete has to be the most versatile building substance available! You can use it for floors or decks, you can build walls, you can mold it, shape it, even grind and polish it. But when it does start to show its age, it may also be expensive to fix or replace. If at all possible, it's cheaper to simply repair the existing slab. This article will cover some of your options on the subject of concrete slab repair.

To begin with, how can you tell when the damage has gone beyond repair? A visual examination should be enough to answer your question. If the cracking is deep and widespread, then look how even the matching surfaces are. If it's obvious there's been a good bit of settling, then any attempt at concrete slab repair would only be temporary. Significant settling is usually caused by heavily loaded trucks, erosion, or poor installment of the sub-grade, or maybe a combination. In colder climates you also have to consider the possibility of "frost heave", where freezing and thawing in the ground below the slab causes the slab to break and heave upward. If any of these is true, then it's just time to replace your slab.

But if the slab only has surface cracking, or if the broken edges are still close together and even (indicating no settling or heave) then you still have a good chance of a lasting repair. In that case, you should certainly consider concrete slab repair as a viable option. Unless you're already a "pro" at this sort of job, it might be a good idea to call a professional. But if you'd like to try to do it yourself, we can give you the basic steps right here.

Concrete slab repair step one: cleaning. It would be best to rent a power washer to thoroughly clean the surface of your slab. It's vital that all dirt and loose residue be removed in order for the repair compound to properly bond to the old concrete, producing a lasting repair.

Concrete slab repair step two: prepare the edges. Using a chisel and hammer, cut the edges of the cracks to a backward angle. Clean dust and debris using a good stiff brush, either by hand or with a drill. If the crack is a deep one, then you must fill it with sand up to within 1/2 inch of the surface.

Concrete slab repair step three: apply the bonding solution. You may be tempted to skip this step, but that would be a mistake. The bonding solution helps the repair compound to chemically bond with the old concrete. Without it, your careful work might simply dry and pop out. So use a paint brush and apply a thin layer to the entire inside of the crack.

Concrete slab repair step four: apply the repair compound. Mix your repair compound according to directions, then use a trowel to fill in the cracks. Initially, you should fill the hole above the surface, then feather and smooth it until it's even with the surface.

After you've repaired the cracks in your concrete, there are some concrete resurfacing options you can also consider, such as paint, sealer, texture, stamping, and others. Whatever you decide, though, you should wait at least 72 hours after the concrete slab repair is finished before using the concrete or applying any treatments.

So take a look at your slab with these options in mind. Concrete slab repair might save you a bundle!

Saint Joseph Statue

The history of St. Joseph is not as well known as the history of Jesus or the history of Mary but St. Joseph was also a very important figure. St. Joseph came from the line of King David, one of the most well known Biblical kings. Joseph was a carpenter from Bethlehem who was engaged to Mary when Mary became pregnant with Jesus. If Joseph had decided not to go through with the marriage because of the pregnancy in that culture and at that time in history Mary would have been publicly shamed and possibly even stoned. To protect her Joseph married her anyway and agree to raise Jesus as his own child.

Throughout the Bible there are mentions of the history of St. Joseph and of his kind and loving nature. Even though he is not mentioned very often in the story of Jesus, not as much as Mary or some of the Apostles, it is clear that his influence and teachings had a profound effect on Jesus and helped him become a very compassionate, kind and caring person. St. Joseph has been revered as a father for centuries and today is the patron saint of family and the home.

The history of St. Joseph as a saint is an interesting one. For a long time he was not officially recognized as a saint because he had always been venerated as a saint since the very beginning of the church and was not canonized in the way that saints who were declared saints after the organization were canonized in order to achieve sainthood. In 1870 Pope Pious IX declared Saint Joseph the patron saint of the Universal Church, so St. Joseph really is considered to be the father of the Church and not just the foster father of Jesus.

The history of St. Joseph helping people sell their homes is said to have started way back in the mid 1500's when St. Teresa of Avila was looking for a place to build a second convent for the order of nuns that she founded, the Discalced Carmelite order. Even though she searched for quite awhile she couldn't find an appropriate piece of land to build the convent on. So she prayed to Saint Joseph for help, since he is the patron saint of land and home. She also had her nuns pray to St. Joseph and bury medals of St. Joseph around the property where the original convent was.

Soon she found the perfect piece of land to build the second convent and found the second chapter of the Discalced Carmelite nuns and she credited St. Joseph with helping her find the land she needed. Because of that it became a tradition for anyone that was searching for a home to bury medals and later statues of Saint Joseph in the ground and to pray to St. Joseph for help finding a new home.

Over the years the tradition was adapted a little bit and it became customary for people that wanted to sell their homes to pray to St. Joseph and bury a statue of St. Joseph in the yard of the home in order to attract buyers for the property. Some people say that this tradition came about because German builders would put small St. Joseph statues or medals in the walls and the foundations of homes that they were building to bless the home and protect the family that moved in.

In the end no one really knows where the history of St. Joseph statues being used to sell home really began but that doesn't change the fact that it works. So if you're trying to sell your home you should pray to St. Joseph for help and bury a St. Joseph statue in your yard. You'll be amazed at how quickly you'll get an offer on the property.

Searching For Your Dream Home

First things first when looking for your dream home. Make a list of all the things you're looking for. With today's computers and search engines on the Internet it makes home shopping by keywords very simple.

Most real estate websites have boxes you can check off, if you're looking for a three-bedroom house with two bathrooms and a swimming pool. You simply check these items off, select the area you would like to search for homes and and you now have a list of homes to look at.

Some of these homes have virtual tours on the Internet, which allows you to go through most of the home before you actually visit the house. Modern technology has made searching for your dream home a virtual reality.

You can now look through the list and select the most appealing homes before you start driving around. Don't let the pictures of these homes deceive you on the Internet or MLS. Some of the descriptions of these homes can also be very deceptive.

When looking for your dream home, used every possible means available to you. This would include your real estate professionals, newspapers, magazines, search engines, internet websites, and don't forget about driving around your favorite neighborhoods. This is actually how we found one of the homes we bought.

Our real estate salesman gave us a list of homes to look at, while we were driving around, we spotted a home that caught our attention and we pulled in the driveway. To our amazement, the real estate saleswoman who listed the home lived a couple of houses down the street and was right there asking if we wanted to see the inside of the house.

Your family, friends, neighbors and people you work with, can also help you with your homebuying quest. You would be surprised at how helpful some of these people can be. I knew someone who found a home they really liked, knocked on the door and told the homeowners, they would be very interested if their home was ever put on the market. Within a few weeks, he was buying the home.

I'm not telling you to knock on everyone's door whose not selling their house, but you never know how or when you're going to run into the house of your dreams.

Making Rejection Work for You in Your Creative Life

No matter what your art form or field of expression: visual arts, performing arts, or writing--one thing is for certain: you will encounter rejection. When you do, what is the most healthy and useful way to respond? Eden Maxwell, author of "An Artist Empowered" offers these suggestions:

1. Know why you are an artist.

2. Know your purpose and the value of your process.

3. View rejection as a mirror that reveals truth about your dedication.

4. Confront yourself and this moment of awareness.

5. Use rejection as a moment of awareness, not a pool in which to drown.

6. Stay focused on results, but unattached to the results of your efforts.

7. A daily spiritual practice helps you keep life, art, and rejection in perspective.

Eden expands here on these seven suggestions.

Janet: Eden, talk about your approach to rejection in the arts. How does this relate to your spiritual practice?

Eden: As a writer and a painter, I have been on the receiving end of both acceptance and rejection and each has its own set of issues. It all comes back full circle to the core question: Why am I an artist?

If you know your purpose and the value of your process, then nothing will deter you from your mission, your dharma.

Janet: What is the true purpose of rejection, in your view?

Eden: Rejection, as it turns out, isn't the bane most artists believe it is; rejection is a mirror that reveals truth about your dedication; you are compelled to confront your own self and that is a moment of awareness.

Janet: How can the creative person learn from rejection?

Eden: If you are to learn from rejection, use the experience as a moment of reflection, not a pool in which to drown.

Should my art be rejected, I understand that if they could see it, could appreciate it, then they would. Also, a rejection from an anonymous party is no cause for faltering. I have seen great art ignored, and mediocre embraced.

Janet: How can the artist balance the need to have goals and yet to hold these goals lightly?

Eden: Having goals is good; wanting to share your unique gift is good; making art is good. Keeping these desires in mind, I also realize that getting attached to any outcome is a self-made prison. Releasing your attachment to an outcome frees you to see other opportunities.

I strive to have no attachment in how a particular outcome manifests. I work; I create; I have faith in fulfilling my dharma; and my evolving strength tells me the Universe is handling the details.

So, no matter what is happening, I focus on the true goal, and the goal is this: understanding.

Visit Janet Grace Riehl's blog "Riehl Life: Village Wisdom for the 21st Century" at http://www.riehlife.com for more thoughts and information about making connections through the arts, across cultures, generations, and within the family. Fixing Up Your Home And How To Finance It

Undertaking a home improvement project can be really expensive and thus, financing is essential. There are many financial products that can help you finance home improvements. Some are more suitable for the task than others but all of them have advantages and disadvantages.

When home improvements are necessary, the following financial solutions can provide you with the needed funds for the project depending on the amount you want: Credit cards, unsecured personal loans, mortgage loans and home equity loans. All of them (except for the credit cards) can be called home improvement loans because what defines a home improvement loan is the use that you give to the money. However, home improvement loans are usually either mortgage loans or home equity loans.

Credit Cards For Financing Home Improvements

Credit cards are undoubtedly great financial tools due to their flexibility. However, they are not particularly useful in terms of scrimping and saving. The interest rates charged by credit card issuers are significantly higher than the rates charged by lenders and thus, a $3000 home improvement project can end up costing $600 more per year. However, used in combination with other financial products like home equity loans, credit cards can provide the funds necessary for covering unexpected expenses in the project or additional improvements that may rise while the original project is on course.

Unsecured Personal Loans For Home Improvements

Unsecured personal loans are perfect for home improvements but can provide the funds for small projects only. If your home improvement plans will not be that costly, then an unsecured personal loan for home improvements may be the solution. Besides, personal loans have an advantage over secured loans: there is little to no paperwork and they are processed considerably faster due to the lack of collateral.

Mortgage Loans For Home Improvements

If your property is not securing any debt, then, you can request a home improvement mortgage loan. These loans come with the lowest rates on the market. Since you already own the property, however, the interest rate will not be as low as home loans for first time home buyers which feature subsidized rates. But the interest rate will still be significantly lower than that of any other financial product.

Home Improvement Loans Based On Equity

Last, but not means least, home equity loans are the most common form of home improvement loans. These loans are based on the equity left on your property. Thus, it does not matter if you have a mortgage balance on your property, you can still get finance for your home improvements as long as the value of the property is higher than the amount of money you owe that is secured by it.

The amount of money you can obtain will depend on your available equity. However, for home improvements, there are loan options offering up to 125% financing if you have a good credit score and history. Thus, even if you have only $10,000 left on a $100,000 property, you will be able to obtain up to $35,000 on a home improvement loan based on equity.

Rustic Feeling With Vinyl Log Siding

Love the look of a log cabin and then realize it is a major operation just to change things or blow out walls. I suggest trying vinyl log siding as an option. It looks very much like log, and gives your home that rustic feel. Vinyl log siding does not require the maintenance that real wood requires, giving you more time to enjoy your home.

No longer will you have to stain, seal or even make plan for insect prevention, because vinyl log siding is low maintenance, while still getting that wood look you desire. It is fade resistant even after years of exposure to the sun and the weather. It will never rot, splinter or corrode, in fact if you are a mother like me, not having to pick splinters out of little hands can be a real time saver. I do not want to put anything on my house or in my house that could hurt my kids.

Vinyl log siding installs as easily as any other vinyl siding and looks great up. It has absolutely no maintenance what so ever saving you lots of time and money. Some people even choose to fill it in with in with thermal insulation. I think that is a wise decision whether you live in a hot and humid climate like mine or in a colder climate. Good insulation can dramatically change your heating and cooling bills. It also stabilizes the temperature in the home, where it does not fluctuate too much.

It can range in price, but the actual product is worth the expense, which is similar or cheaper than the alternative siding, remember this type of siding is basically maintenance free. The place where you could wind up spending a lot of money is on the actual labor of putting it up. Every time I have a project around the house, I have a big barbecue and invite people over to help with the bribe of free food. What you will pay for food and drinks will not come near to what you would pay a stranger to do it and as a bonus you will be working with people you enjoy being around. It is also easy to put up if you have the right tools and a little patience. You can enjoy the look of real logs, with out the cost, hassle or maintenance, by choosing to go with vinyl log siding.

Build Your Own Wind Turbine - How to Build a Home Made Windmill

Global warming and dwindling supplies of fossil fuels have caused people from all corners of the globe to become concerned, resulting in a long overdue interest in the potential of wind energy. On the other hand, many people have already embraced this free source of renewable energy and are already powering their homes with wind energy.

Wind Energy

Radiation from our sun heats the air which in turn rises. As this warm air rises, so cooler air sinks down to replace it, resulting in perpetual wind currents which cover the surface of our planet. Of course, wind currents have energy and when one considers how devastating a hurricane or a tornado can be, it's all to easy to imagine what a phenomenal amount of energy can be harnessed from the wind.

Of course, for the purpose of powering your home with wind energy, we're only interested in more moderate winds, suitable for wind turbines. In essence, a wind turbine is much the same as the old original windmill; only wind turbines incorporate technology which allows us to convert wind power into electricity

Wind Turbines

In the past, wind farms, which can sometimes be seen on the roadside, were mainly used to supply remote areas which were of the grid as well as remote farms. Nowadays however, wind turbines are becoming increasingly common even in residential areas that do receive grid supplied power. In this case, a wind turbine can either reduce your consumption of grid power or even eliminate it altogether.

In order to achieve maximum stability, all wind turbines have no less than three lightweight blades, usually made from PVC for extra durability.

As most are familiar with, a wind turbine needs to be mounted on a tower and while those used on wind farms can be more than a hundred feet high, residential towers only need to be high enough to ensure the turbine blades are above any structures which could obstruct the wind. In addition to being mounted on a tower, the blade assembly is mounted on a shaft to enable it to swivel around as the wind direction changes.

Home Wind Energy Systems

While wind turbines can come in many shapes and sizes, those which are used for powering homes are divided into three kinds:

1) Grid inter-tied with backup battery

2) Grid inter-tied without backup battery

3) Off-Grid system

Irrespective of which system you use, all three systems harness wind energy and convert it to electricity in exactly the same manner. The difference between the various systems lies in the wiring, and in the case where a battery is being used; electricity can be saved and used as and when required. In a system that has no battery, electricity is supplied directly into the home supply.

Wind turbines provide practically all homeowners with an ideal opportunity for powering the home with wind energy. Not only will you save money on electric bills, but you'll also be helping to build a greener world.

If you are interested in learning how to Build Your Own Wind Turbine visit solarwindenergys.com where you will see how easy and affordable it is to construct your very own Home Made Wind Mill.

Bathroom Remodeling Ideas For Remodeling

When you're planning any bathroom remodel, consider the costs of the bathroom remodeling versus the return on the actual investment. According to one of the popular remodeling magazines, the average bathroom remodel throughout the country cost around $16,000.

If you were to sell your house within a few years, you could recoup around $12,000 of your original investment. This would translate into a $4000 loss to your pocketbook eventually.

Using these numbers for your bathroom remodel investment, you would recoup around 75% of your original investment. If you know anything about investing money, this will not be a good rate of return and if you keep investing your money like this, you won't have any to invest, eventually.

Keep this in mind, if you're going to be selling the home within a few years. If the bathroom isn't in good shape and you're not planning on selling soon, you could remodel the bathroom and enjoy it for quite a few years. You wouldn't be looking at this as an investment but as maintenance costs.

If you need to remodel the bathroom, because it's getting a little run down and will create a problem when selling a home, I would suggest minor remodeling, if the toilet, fixtures and bathtub is in good condition, I would suggest changing the sink, cabinet, bathtub surround, flooring and some new paint.

If you're remodeling cost is now at $8,000, you would recoup at least $6,000 and would only lose $2000 on your original investment. Now this still doesn't make any sense, if you're still losing money, why would you even want to remodel the bathroom. Why not sell the home as it is and not lose any money? This is a tough decision to make and keep in mind, these are average costs.

You could recoup less or more than 75% of your bathroom investment costs.

Most real estate professionals will advise you to remodel the bathroom for two reasons, for one the house will sell for a few more dollars, and this will increase their sales commission. The second one is probably the most important for any one selling a home, the home could sell faster.

If you have the time and are in no hurry to sell the home, I would suggest trying to sell the home as is first and then sprucing it up, if you can't sell it within three months.

Why Stress Is Dangerous

Almost everyone finds stress annoying and unwanted in their lives, but not everyone knows how dangerous stress can be - especially when it stays in your body for a long time. Certain parts of our bodies are directly affected by stress and its adverse effects.

Stress begins in the brain. There is a sudden unexpected surge of "stress" hormones when you feel anxiety. When these hormones are released, sleeping and resting are nearly impossible. Though being extremely energetic is good when one is working, the human body is not built for such state for long periods of time. If the hyper-activity is extended too much, one will eventually experience headaches, mood swings, aggressiveness, and a loss of the ability to concentrate on a given task. During this time, it becomes difficult to retain information and short term memory can be affected.

There is a constant misconception that men are less susceptible to stress compared to women and this idea is now being challenged. Studies reveal that the difference between men and women is not stress susceptibility, but their way of dealing with stress.

Too much stress also stops the function of the "hypothalamus" which is where the brain regulates emotion. When we are stressed, the hormones that make us feel better (endorphins) are not well regulated. Thus, we lack energy to deal with problems and tasks, and we eventually feel unwell.

Another area affected by stress is the ears. Though high stress usually increases our awareness and therefore our hearing, it does not mean that it is healthy to be in this constant state of arousal. A study from Cornell University reveals that during hyper-awareness, there is a greater risk for heart failure. Since our hearing is increasingly sensitive when we are stressed, we are more exposed to hearing loud honks of car horns, too loud ringtones and shouting.

One's lungs are also affected by stress, as one will more likely experience hyperventilation when he or she is under a lot of stress. It is a natural response for our body to demand more oxygen when it feels in danger or uncomfortable. Too much inhaling of oxygen will cause dizziness and a sharp pain on the chest. Asthma and other respiratory problems can be triggered if there is too much inhalation of oxygen.

When one is under stress, the adrenaline resulting from this state will dilate the eyes, thus improving one's vision. However it also might cause eye ticks. Over time, your eyes become overused, over-stimulated and fatigued.

Uncontrolled stress also dries out the mouth, and leads to dehydration - something we all know is uncomfortable and unhealthy. Clenching jaws and grinding teeth are also normal mannerisms of people when they undergo stress.

As proven by countless researchers, aromatherapy is a good way to de-stress. One will instantly feel rejuvenated after a relaxing bath using products made from essential oils and plant extracts such as the oils of jasmine and lavender. Nice flowery scents take the mind off the problems that are impending, and stimulate the brain. Not only do they smell great, but plant based products tend to restore hydration and replenish oils in the skin that are lost during times of stress. The skin will not only look better from the outside, but it will also absorb the essential oils that are bundled with aromatherapy products and be healthier on the inside.

Estate Planning - Estate Taxes

Estate tax, or the death tax as it is sometimes referred to, is an issue often bandied about at election time. If the innuendoes of the sound bites are to be believed, the instant someone dies, the government collects a huge amount of tax from the estate just as a general principle. The specter of estate tax is looming in the corner of every hospital room in America, or so goes the story, waiting to deprive widows of their husbands' hard-earned pensions and children of their college funds, if Mr. X is not elected to Congress or the White House.

While it is true that a decrease in estate tax benefits the wealthiest two percent of Americans, it is also true that only the wealthiest two percent of Americans are subject to estate tax to begin with-at least under present law.

Estate taxes are taxes assessed on property transferred at the time of death. They are based on the gross estate, including real estate, insurance, trusts, annuities, cash, business interests, securities, and all other assets. The items are not assessed at their value at the time they were purchased, but rather at their fair market value at the time of death. For example, if you purchased a home for $50,000 in 1970 and the value of the property has appreciated in the meantime to be worth $175,000 based on sales of comparable properties in the same neighborhood, estate taxes would be assessed on the present worth of $175,000.

Once the gross estate is calculated, applicable deductions are subtracted from that value. Deductions include property that passes to surviving spouses, mortgages and other debts, and estate administration expenses. In some cases the value of operating business interests or farms may be reduced, according to the IRS, "for estates that qualify." The value arrived at after deductions is referred to as the "taxable estate". Lifetime gifts are added back in and an available unified credit is applied before the estate tax is actually assessed. The good news for most of us is that your taxable estate, as an individual, must exceed $1,000,000 for estate tax to apply, as the law currently stands.

The federal Tax Act of 2001 changed several provisions of the law regarding estate taxes. The rate at which estate taxes were assessed in 2001 was 55% of the gross estate less all applicable exemptions. The 2001 Tax Act began stepping estate taxes down gradually in 2002 to the present rate of 46% in 2006 and on down to 0% in 2010.

The premise behind the 2001 Tax Act is that some of the revenue lost to the U.S. Government through reduction and eventual abolishment of the estate tax will be recouped by capital gains taxes that your heirs will have to pay if and when they dispose of the property bequeathed to them. Prior to 2001, heirs automatically received a "full basis step-up" to fair market value on inherited property and did not have to pay capital gains tax when they sold the property. At present, heirs do not enjoy that benefit. If, for example, you paid $60,000 for five acres of land in 1965 and you leave it to your son or daughter when you die. The son or daughter sells the land for $200,000 in 2006 and has to pay capital gains tax on $140,000, or the difference between what you paid for it at the time of purchase and the fair market value at the time it was sold.

Needless to say, estate tax issues are extremely complicated and, if you fall into the category of wealth that would require payment of estate taxes on your demise, be sure to discuss them with your attorney or other estate planner.

Ronald Hudkins is an advocate for consumer awareness. He has noted that more than 70% of the American public fails to make appropriate estate plans prior to death or incapacitation and as such; authored an Ebook "Asset Protection and Estate Planning for All Ages" It is available for free download at http://stores.lulu.com/rhudkins

How Today's House Plans Can Lower Building Costs

A home plan is a set of construction documents that serve as the "assembly" manual for a new home. There are no standards or laws that require specific information on these drawings so there is a wide variety in the quality of the plans available on the market today. Some plans show only a floor layout and a simple front elevation.Other plans show more details and include accurate dimension lines, construction details and wall cutaways. But regardless of how detailed the plan may be, the plan is typically designed for one specific lot, one specific region and one set of building codes. An intelligent home plan has the ability to meet any lot, region or code.In fact, an intelligent home plan can make a new home less costly, more efficient and easier to build.

Intelligent home plans are comprised of a sophisticated set of drawings that detail every aspect of home construction. These drawings are created in a way that makes updates, changes and modifications quick and easy.According to Bill Elliott, COO of a national home design studio, the biggest downfall of most online home plans is the difficulty of making changes and modifications. Most home plans will require some type of modification to meet the needs of the home owner, builder or local building code authorities. It is this hidden cost that most people don't see.Builders may purchase a home plan for a few hundred dollars and then spend thousands more to update and change them.Even worse, if the plan is poorly done, the costs needed to modify the plans may be more than creating a brand new plan.

An intelligent home plan is designed to be flexible. They are drawn in a way that supports efficient and rapid changes.Similar elements used in the drawings are grouped together and saved in layers for quick access by any designer.Line weights and dimensions are uniform throughout the plan set and the information is detailed and accurate. These root fundamentals form the foundation of every Intelligent Home Plan - a collection of informative documents that sets the tone for the entire building process. Each intelligent home plan links the designer, builder, contractor, supplier and home owner together into a single organized team.

More than just a nice drawing, intelligent home plans translate the home design into functional packets of data used throughout the building process.Exact dimensions are used for accurate quotes and product specifications.Structural data is dissected to ensure code compliance and building integrity.Design details are interfaced with automated saws and joiners to speed the assembly of walls and floors while realistic virtual models ensure the final product meets every need of the most demanding buyer.Intelligent Home Plans can interface with a variety of software and hardware currently servicing the building industry.Dependable and consistent data from these designs feeds these independent support services and links them together into coordinated and managed processes.

The reliable, accurate and flexible nature of intelligent home plans creates a seamless translation of data across all phases of home construction producing a higher quality home at less cost.In the past, home plans were merely lines on paper used to build a home. But today's challenging housing market places demands on the home building process that cannot be met by a few sheets of paper.Only intelligent home plans can deliver the data needed to build the homes of tomorrow at an affordable price.

Crystals For Ascendant in Libra

September 23 - October 22

Ascendant Crystal: Rose Quartz

As an Ascendant in Libra you present yourself to the world as being charming and well dressed. You like everything around you to be in harmony and stylish, which includes your home, your office, your attire and everything in between.

Another characteristic of a ascendant in Libra is their in ability to make decisions and going from one extreme to the other. You are considered to be the most congenial of all zodiac signs and relationships are very important to you. You can tend to have a people pleasing side to you, however, this can come with a double sided sword as you also have an ambitious and unsympathetic heart and can also tend to be a little selfish. How extreme these characteristics are depends on your sun sign.

You can soften any of your less than charming characteristics by carrying a Rose Quartz; this will attract unconditional love and peaceful relationships of all kinds.

You feel best when dressed in complimenting colors and rich fabrics that are considered to be rated at well dressed; you tend to want to have a good appearance rather than actually looking and being confident. Again wearing and/or carrying a Rose Quartz will encourage self-confidence and loving yourself rather than pleasing others.

Basically the rose quartz is your best friend to have with you at all times, it neutralizes all the negative rough edges to your ascendant sign and brings peace and balance into your life. It helps you to be more creative and to acquire inner peace. This also assists with your selfish nature and deep tendency to people pleasing, and allows you to diminish your need for perfection and being in relationships that feel suffocating. So keep this best friend crystal with you at all times.

How to Test For Pure Honey

The term "adulterated honey" implies that the honey has been added glucose, dextrose, molasses, corn syrup, sugar syrup, invert sugar, flour, starch, or any other similar product, other than the floral nectar gathered, processed, and stored in the comb by honey bees. Legal standards and requirements for foods, including honey quality, and tests for honey adulteration vary widely amongst countries and some may not meet the wish of every consumer around the world.

Personally, when selecting honey in the shop, I think it's almost impossible to tell the bad from the good by just looking at the honey content through the bottle or studying its food and nutrition labels. My take is always -- go for the trusted or more known brands. We all know that a "pure honey" label doesn't guarantee at all that it is not diluted with water and further sweetened with corn syrup; it just promises that there is real pure honey inside, with no suggestion of its amount.

The law does not require a "pure honey" label to say how much pure honey is in the bottle. Some honey brands you get from the supermarkets don't carry any ingredients list and this is enough to make me feel suspicious of the quality. Also, prices are not always a good indication of quality honey. In food fraud cases, manufacturers can mix different honey floral blends and sell it as more expensive varieties such as Manuka honey. And so-called "local honey" may not be locally produced and processed local honey but cheap, low quality honey imported from other countries but bottled and distributed locally.

A common misconception is that granulated or crystallized honey is proof of adulteration with sugar water. The truth is honey is a supersaturated sugar solution and can granulate whether or not it has been adulterated, so crystallization is normal, especially in temperate climates. Furthermore, some honey from certain floral sources is especially prone to crystallization. Buying honey in the comb is one way to assure ourselves of a quality product. Comb honey is sealed in the hive by the bees; therefore consumers can be confident that the honey has not been adulterated with sugar water. However, to boost honey production, some irresponsible beekeepers feed their bees with sugar syrup so that the bees can convert the syrup to "honey". What these bees produced is honey that is adulterated, very clear and runny, just like syrup.

Some websites teaches that ants don't fancy pure honey and will not hover around it. I don't quite understand or believe this, there's no reason why ants would favour processed sugar over honey. Also, I was wondering how to invite the ants for a honey assessment (does "no ants" mean pure honey?). The reason why a sweet liquid is more attractive than another for the ants could also be due to the liquid density and we know that honey viscosity varies depending on its floral type. Another test that is commonly discussed over the internet is the flame test which involves lighting up a cotton bud dipped into the honey with a match-stick flame. It's believed that the honey will burn if it's pure. I have tried this method many times using different types of honey, some of which I was very sure they're pure honey (e.g honeycomb honey), but the result I got was never consistent, and it seemed to depend very much on how much honey was dipped and how long the honey was exposed to the flame.

There's another simple way which I have tried to verify the purity of honey: Observe how liquid honey comes down into a glass of water. Pure honey does not immediately dissolve in water; you will notice that it takes a bit of effort to stir it in the water to dissolve the lumpy bits, whereas sugar tends to dissolve easily in a jiggery as you drop them into the water. However, test result is sometimes not that clear because different honey varieties have different viscosity, some are denser and thicker than others, and obviously honey in cream form, even if it's adulterated with other substance, will not dissolve as easy as liquid honey in water.

It is suggested that people who are used to tasting honey may be easier to detect any added sugar. But frankly, because there are just too many floral varieties and blends, and the amount of adulteration may not be sufficient to affect the taste and aroma of the honey, even though I frequently take honey, I am still not 100% certain about my suspicion sometimes.

Hence, it's hard to be really absolutely sure about honey authenticity, unless from home you can perform scientific laboratory test like spectroscopy, a method that uses the principle of interaction of light with mater to differentiate substances or conduct carbon isotope ratios analysis to determine if sugars were added to the honey (don't bother if these jargons sound totally bizarre; as a consumer, I am not familiar with them either). Nevertheless, from all the verification ways that are discussed above (labels, pouring, dissolving honey, etc) if you have reasons to suspect that the honey is diluted and corn syrup has been added, my stance is - stay away from those brands. Better to err on the side of caution than to be sorry...well, you most probably won't fall sick by taking the adulterated honey, but you know adulteration with cheaper sugars brings down the natural value of the honey and this doesn't help in justifying for the amount of money you pay.

10 Useful Feng Shui Tips to Bring Love and Warmth Back in Your Home

Many husband-wives spend all their time fighting each other. This not only affects their marriage life but also have a bad effect on their children. In this article you will learn how Feng Shui helps in bringing warmth and love back in your home.

Examine your bedroom. Is it full of color or does the room give you a feeling of warmth and comfort? Are the walls painted red or bright yellow? Write down all the observations of your bedroom.

1. The walls should be painted a nice, soft, romantic color. Green and blues are good for the bedroom.
2. Replace the bed sheets with new soft linen. Pink and green are great colors to open your hearts for better communication.
3. Place your bed against a wall, farthest from the door.
4. You and your spouse should have a good view of the door.
5. Have a minimum of two pillows on the bed. Pillows should always be in multiples of two.
6. Locate the southwest corner in the bedroom. Decorate it to symbolize growth and harmony in your relationship, such as photo of you and your spouse.
7. Go to all the southwest corners in the home and see what all lie in corners. Are they vacant or filled with clutter? Clean out all the southwest corners and place a vibrant plant or objects in pairs.
8. Organize and clean the front entrance. Have a meandering path to the other areas of the home. If the hallway is filled with chaos and unfinished projects, it will most likely spark friction.
9. Organize and clutter free the entire home. Invest in a house that's cleaner, if time is an issue.
10. Play soft music or nature sounds. Have a CD player that can continually repeat the music while you are not at home. The sounds will permeate through the house and give you a welcome as you enter.

If the home is relaxing and comforting, there will be fewer fights and more discussions of your problems.

Mouth Watering French Gourmet Food

Many people in the United States as well as in the rest of the world know of the distinct quality and flavor of French cuisine.

French food is frequently duplicated in the United States as well as in other countries of the world, but to experience the French gourmet foods that France is known for, it's best to break France apart into different regions and explore the different tastes France itself has to offer.

France divides it's regions up into different departments, and under these different departments, visitors can find different French gourmet food, as well as distinct French flavors, beverages, and chocolates.

In the Champagne region of France, this area is best known for the sparkling wine known as Champagne. This area reserves the right to call their sparkling wine Champagne because of the unique grapes that grow in this area as well as the name of the region itself.

Champagne is one in a group of three regions in a collective area that offers fine French gourmet foods. Lorraine is known for its selection of fruits and is also famous for quiche, a baked product which contains pastry, cream, and eggs. However despite Champagne's notoriety for having the only sparkling wine in the world that can be called its namesake, Paris also has some of the most unique and interesting French gourmet foods.

Paris is known for having a variety of different French gourmet food dishes as well as many other cultures. All train lines lead centrally into Paris so almost any food product is available. Paris also houses some of the best restaurants in the world, and over 5,000 of these restaurants exist in this one city alone.

Brittany and Normandy are towards the shore line in Northern France and are known for their exquisite sea products. Brittany has a fine gourmet selection of lobster, crayfish, and mussels.

Another place for superb crayfish lies outside of France in New Orleans, Louisiana and is worth a mention for all the French gourmet foods that have influenced Creole cooking. Normandy, also along the Northern coast has a fine selection of scallops and sole, a type of fish.

Normandy also has many apple trees, many of which are used for cider and other pastry dishes. All of the food items from these areas are known for having the highest quality, mostly because France has some of the finest soil in the world for growing French gourmet foods for French dishes.

Many areas in France are known for gourmet wine, such as Bordeaux and Burgundy. Burgundy is the more well-known of the two, some of the finest wines in France coming from this region alone.

Not only does Burgundy offer some of the finest wines, but this region is also the home of Dijon mustard as well as currants, a favorite among gourmet chefs. This area is also known for snails, high quality poultry, river crabs, pike, and honey cake.

The best place to find French gourmet foods in the United States is either at a local gourmet market, or by importing directly to the home from France itself. Needless to say, French gourmet food items are some of the best in the world.

Home Maintenance Tips You Can't Afford to Ignore

Without a doubt, buying a home can be the largest investment youll ever make. With the average home costing approximately $190,000, many homeowners take great pains to ensure that all cosmetic and structural repairs are attended to. However, the truth is that many expensive repairs could be avoided by simply sticking to a routine maintenance schedule. Routinely checking your home for emerging problems will prevent larger, more expensive problems that leave homeowners scrambling for a quick repairrather than a cost-effective one. Clearly, regular home maintenance is something you cant afford to ignore.

When to Inspect

Spring is a good time to begin assessing your home for any damage or repairs that need attending to. A good rule of thumb is to check your home at the same time you change your fire alarm batteriesat the beginning (spring) and end (fall) of daylight savings time. Doing so will ensure that minor repairs dont turn into major expenses. Some components of your home may require less-frequent monitoring (foundation), and some may require more (changing the furnace filter). However, taking a walkthrough of your home twice yearly is a good rule of thumb to begin with.

Who Should Inspect

If you feel unqualified to asses every crack and unidentified water leak in your home, feel free to hire a handy man. Not only will he be able to spot any problems, but he can also advise on repairs and costs right on the spot. Do you want a thorough evaluation? Hire a home inspector. Do keep in mind, however, that home inspectors cost much more (around $300) and may not necessarily find every problem.

In most instances, though, simply paying attention to your home is all it takes to spot any emerging problems. For example, if your toilet runs all the time, chances are it needs to be repaired. Have you noticed that your doors dont shut properly anymore? That could be a sign of foundation settling or warping. Simply making a list of things around your home that seem off can make your inspection process much easier. No matter what your plans, the following items are a good place to start when evaluating the condition of your home:

Exterior Items

  • Chimneys:
Check chimneys for loose or deteriorating bricks or mortar. Make sure that metal chimneys are rust-free. A white, salty buildup on the chimney (efflorescence), indicates moisture build-up, and should be checked out by a professional. Its a good idea to have your chimneys professionally cleaned and inspected on an annual basis, in addition to you own visual assessments.
  • Roofs:
Have a leak inside the house? Chances are its your roof. Beyond that, look for chipped or missing shingles, or shingles that may be rubbed away by hanging tree limbs. Take this chance to trim trees up away from the shingles. Also make sure to check flashings, soffits, fascia, and any wood trim that comes in contact with the roof for rotting or peeling paint. Touch up and repair as needed.
  • Gutters and Downspouts:
Clean out your gutters and downspouts twice a year to ensure that no leakage or damage occurs. In addition, you may want to place screens over your gutters (available at home improvement stores) to prevent leaves and debris from entering the gutter system. Check for any places that they may be pulling away from the house or leaking. If paint is deteriorating, now is a good time to touch up.
  • Exterior Walls and Foundation:
Check for any cracks, deterioration, or peeling paint. If foundation cracking is excessive, call for a professional assessment. Otherwise, you can patch it yourself with mortar patch (which can be piped in with a caulk gun).
  • Soil Grading:
Does water seem to settle around the houserather than drain away? Check to make sure that the soil slopes away from the house (1 inch per 6 feet is recommended). If it doesnt, simply backfill with some topsoil until you reach the desired effect.
  • Doors and Windows:
Look for peeling or cracked caulk and weather stripping. These can easily be purchased at any home improvement store and repaired in a small amount of time. Clean out window wells and check that windows and doors open, shut, and lock properly.
  • Porches, Decks, and Patios:
Sealing your wooden porches and decks on an annual basis will help prevent against rotting and deterioration. Secure any wobbly rails or steps, and replace or treat any rotting or deteriorating wood. Check patios for cracks or settling, and repair as necessary.
  • Driveways and Sidewalks:
Check for cracking, and fill with concrete-patch as needed. Taking this time to seal your concrete areas will help prevent any further cracking and deterioration.
  • Attics and Crawlspaces:
Inspect attics and crawlspaces for any signs of water leakage, and repair as necessary. In addition, look for mildew, rot, and fungus growth. Repair any loose or damaged insulation, and check that attic vents are functioning properly. Look for any signs of vermin, and treat as necessary by placing bait or trapsor hiring a professional exterminator.

    Electrical

Do you have outlets that are loose? Now is the time to have them replacedeither by an electrician or yourself. Check your main breaker panel for any signs of deterioration. Turn breakers on and off to make sure all are functioning properly, and check all fuses. Do you smell something burning? Call a professional. Also, take this time to check the ground fault circuit interrupters (usually around sinks and other water elements) to ensure they function properly.

    Heating and Air Conditioning

Does your heating and air conditioning run non-stop? Now is the time to have it checked out. Having your air ducts cleaned by a professional will help your unit run more efficiently. Check the coils on the air conditioning unit for any bent or misshapen areas. Clear debris out of the fan blades before using.

    Plumbing

Check outdoor faucets and supply lines for any signs of leakage. If you have a septic tank, take notice of any foul odors or signs of seepage in the yard. If you havent had your tank emptied yet, do so now.

Take time to repair leaky faucets and caulk bathroom fixtures. Check toilets for any signs of leakageeither from the tank or around the base. Check sump pumps to ensure proper function, and test the pressure relief valve on your water heater to ensure that it hasnt seized up.

    Interior Items

  • Walls:
Look for any signs of mildew or water damage (yellow stains are usually a sign of water damage). Patch holes and cracks in the drywall, and touch up paint as necessary. Monitor any significant cracks, as these could be a sign of foundation problems.
  • Ceilings:
As with walls, take note of any mildew or water stains, and repair as needed. Look for drooping ceilings, and locate the cause to ensure proper repairs. Monitor and repair cracks.
  • Doors and Windows:
Open, close, and lock (where applicable) all doors and windows to ensure proper functioning. Replace weathered caulk around windows and check for any signs of moisture infiltration (particularly in storm windows). Broken or loose knobs, latches, or handles should be repaired now.

While no homeowner can possible catch every problem before it develops into an expensive repair, simply taking note of minor fix-itsand repairing themcan help avoid many costly repair bills in the future. Without a doubt, regular home maintenance is something no homeowner can afford to ignore.

    Universal Design

Few of us pay attention to how we get around in our home until for one reason or another it gets harder to navigate that home.I personally had not given much thought to the fact that my master bedroom was on the second floor until I had knee surgery and found that it was difficult climbing those 13 steps. Luckily for me that inconvenience was temporary and I worked around it with the help of my wife.

Baby boomers like myself are beginning to realize that we are not immortal or immune to the effects of time.Sooner or later we will need to either make or living spaces accessible for our friends, family or ourselves. As architects, we work with these issues every day. From designing a new home which is fully accessible to a library addition on the first floor which can be converted to a master suite or guest suite by closing a pocket door at the end of the hall.

Built in accessibility can be so subtle it is almost unnoticeable unless you are looking for it.Wider doors, spacious bathrooms, grade level entries and curb less showers are a few of the easy features to include in a home you plan to spend a lifetime in. We designed a home for an 89 year old client and his partner who were both avid gardeners and loved to cook.Although the 89 year old was in a wheelchair, he still wanted to get into and out of his house on his own as well be able to prepare meals and tend to his beautiful flower garden. He also did not want his home to scream handicapped accessible. We listened and designed the first floor of his home so he could work and move around without help. He could easily come and go while tending his garden or help cook a fine meal.He decided the second floor could be for guests.

Options have improved for making a home accessible from premade adjustable countertops to less expensive residential elevators, baby boomers have once again changed the way we look at living our lives at home.

    Becoming A Handyman

Anyone who has the basic knowledge of household equipment and wants to make a career as a handyman can become a professional handyman by joining an appropriate apprenticeship program. The basic skills required to become a handyman include manual dexterity, eye-hand coordination, physical fitness, and a good sense of balance. Other skills include mathematical problem solving ability and good color vision, as handymen have to regularly identify different components by color.

An individual may have special training in trades such as electrical engineering or plumbing, but needs to learn and develop other skills such as house painting or automotive repair for becoming a professional handyman. It is important to have mechanical aptitude to become a handyman as most of the jobs rendered by handymen involve mechanical components and systems.
Individuals can enroll in vocational classes at a local college or training center where many professional handyman degrees can be earned in less than two years of study. Well-trained and experienced professionals teach in these organizations and provide practical insights and guidance related to handyman services. These courses combine theoretical as well as hands on training and require the candidates to pass building codes and certification examinations.

Candidates who do not want to join a certification course can enroll for mini handyman courses offered by local community education centers. These courses aim at making the candidates aware about different tools and equipment used for rendering handyman services. These may include different types of electrical tools and other common tools such as pliers, screwdrivers, knives, scissors, bolt cutters, cable cutters, and hammers.

It is important to follow safety guidelines and wear protective goggles and hardhats. Safety guidelines and procedures form a part of handyman training and apprenticeship. Refresher courses should regularly be organized for existing as well as fresher handymen for improving quality of services rendered and minimizing the number of accidents related to handyman services.

Handyman provides detailed information on Handyman, Handyman Services, Starting A Handyman Business, Handyman Tips and more. Handyman is affiliated with Home Remodeling.

Brainwave Entrainment to Fall Asleep - Fact Or Fiction?

Brainwave Entrainment (sometimes known as Brainwave Synchronization), is the term used for bringing brainwaves into a certain state. Whether that state is Alpha, Delta, Beta, Gamma; there is some real truth in the ability to sync both hemispheres of the brain for a desired result.

Many scientific studies have been going on for years, researching binaural beats, which are tones release to the ear through the brain, and helps "synchronize" the two hemispheres to a certain state. Mainly here we are focusing on the Deep Delta state, that which is mostly associated with sleep.

When we are in the Delta brainwave state, we are in a deep dreamless sleep. Sometimes it is hard for many people to enter. Think about it. Do you wake up in the middle of the night? Or do you find that it's hard for you to go to sleep?

According to multiple products, it is able to produce delta brain signals and put the listener to a deep state of relaxation and sleep. Many scientists are still researching this, and there are still some unanswered questions. Only you can decide.

Because of today's society, unfortunately many people are taking prescription drugs or over-the-counter medications to help them fall asleep. What they don't realize (the sad part about it, most do) is that there are many side effects that can occur that have nothing to do with the symptom. Brainwave Entrainment is an alternative to sleeping medication in that it has no reported or proven side-effects.

Perceptions of Self - How You See and Treat Yourself is Expressed in Your Reality - Part 1

Many individuals do not recognise that their self-esteem or self-worth needs improving. As long as they have the personal good looks, status and material needs they think that is all that they need for success and no one else is the wiser to what is going on in their inner world! It goes deeper than an outer faade. Self-esteem and self-image is an outer reflection on their inner level of self-love and self-worth. Their level of worth is expressed in their quality of life, within their experiences and what is happening in their reality.

Human self-esteem problems, issues and challenges can be broken down into four primary categories:

    1. Recognise and address your issue
    2. Acknowledge and respect yourself
    3. Stand your ground with assertion and empowerment
    4. Release disempowering events, things and people

Let's take a look at each individual category:

    1. Recognise and address your issue. The most important factor for you to be able to raise your self-esteem is for you to uncover the issue that is giving you a low self-worth in the first place. Nobody and nothing outside of you can do it for you. Dressing well and living in a nice environment only addresses a perception of your worth on the outside - it is a faade, if you have imbalances within you, or conflicts with those you live and work with, you are just covering up an unfinished business. Even if you are successful at your work, your life's experiences, your health and the quality of your relationships will tell you how much self-love, self-worth and self-acceptance you have. Once you realise that you have a low self-worth you must be ready and willing to do something about it.

    2. Acknowledge and respect yourself. You need to be aware that you attract to you what you are within. You need to acknowledge yourself, accept yourself, love yourself, honour all of your experiences and choices without regrets and to have compassion for yourself etc. Eg. If you do not respect yourself, you will attract others to you who will treat you in a very disrespectful manner. You were born with 100% worth and that is up to you to claim your worth. A lower self-esteem or worth is due to allowing others to belittle you, to influence you into thinking that you are not 'good enough' or you do not deserve to be, do or have something. You have taken on their old truths as your own. You now believe that you are unworthy, it is an old truth and that is how people will treat you. If you feel that you don't deserve, or are unworthy or you do not love yourself in anyway - it is a truth that you have formed, your masquerade story, which is now your lie. It is only your perception on how you see yourself and therefore how you treat yourself either with belittlement emotionally or physically. How you see and treat yourself is reflected back to you as 'like attracts like' scenario in your health, relationships and abundance aspects.

    3. Stand your ground with assertion and empowerment. Once you make a conscious choice to raise your self-esteem and self-worth - be alert to sabotage or you will retreat from exploring this empowering journey fully. The level of your self-worth also relates to the level of your assertion and empowerment. Once you begin to practice self-worth strategies you will soon develop more assertion and empowerment qualities. You will not be so timid in standing your ground towards others manipulations. Once you begin to stand your ground, your family, friends and workmates may dislike it as your personality-identity changes. The sabotage is: when you have a low self-worth, people usually walk all over you and when you hold high regard for yourself and honour yourself and stand in your power, you will not allow them to wipe their feet on your worthy doormat. This can create a conflict in your relationships and you are in danger of retreating if you are not prepared to get out of your comfort zone and 'stand alone'. Change may cause a conflict in the beginning, but if there is unconditional love present with that relationship they will come around to support you, otherwise they will leave your life, because they cannot get what they want from you. If you give up on continuing to raising your level of worth due to family or social challenges, you can retreat back into appeasement, obligation and compromise. If you are not prepared to release anything and anyone who is feeding off you or stealing your energy in order to support their self-absorbed needs you may stop trying to improve your perception of self. That means, if anyone who cannot support you and allow you to choose your own journey, those who do not respect you for who you are and who you can become or those who try to control you through their agendas to get what they want - let them go, they don't serve you in an empowering way. That is conditional love.

    4. Release disempowering events, things and people. The greatest gift anyone can give to you whilst you are choosing to raise your self-worth and your consciousness is their love and support - with compassion but without judgement and agendas - no matter what you choose to do, even if it seems a silly or wrong choice for them. Whatever path you choose to walk down is appropriate for you, for that is what you need to experience to develop your growth and awareness.

True compassion is not just about sadness and pity - it is allowing you to choose your journey without others trying to control you, without others trying to change you or to enforce their righteous ways upon you. Having an agenda or expectation of trying to enforce and change you or what they think you should be, do or have, places limitations and controls onto you. They will disempower you if you allow others to control you, which will result in you retreating into submission or resisting and rebelling with conflicting drama games. Any self-absorbed limitation combined with conditional love suffocates relationships - causing conflict and breakdowns within relationships, as well as your health and abundance levels. This also means that you need true compassion for yourself for all the choices and experiences that you have had. To be able to raise your self-esteem is to release anything or anyone who does not serve your growth.

As you let go of things or people who do not serve you, you may feel that you are left stranded or alone with only a few to support you. As you stand in your power, you will attract other people into your life who will respect you for who you are, you will attract new relationships based on unconditional love into your life and you will attract more abundant opportunities.

Amish Lifestyles in a Modern World

I consider myself a normal person in the fast-paced world, probably just like you. We have our luxuries that we take for granted and never even notice we have them unless we have a power outage. Through my relationship with the Amish, and my desire to learn more about their customs and work ethic, I recently offered my services to assist one of the families of fourteen (14) on their small family farm. I was soon regretting that decision. I found myself assisting the young Amish children, ages 7 through 13, in throwing wheat sheaves onto a horse drawn hay wagon . Needless to say, the young Amish children put me to shame. I could not keep up!

I have learned that the Amish are very hard working and decent people with an unbelievable work ethic . They are trained from a very young age that if a job is worth doing it is a job worth doing right. That instilled value is what makes their products so special. They live a very simple life with minimal furnishings in their homes. It goes without saying that there are no refrigerators, televisions, computers, radios, electricity, telephones, fans, etc. What took me by surprise was finding there are no pictures, doilies, what-knots, or even couches inside their homes! An Amish home is furnished with wooden beds, handmade quilts, basic dressers, a kitchen table with a few hardwood chairs, and wooden floors without even a throw rug.

The families within this area are carried in a black buggy type carriage, which is pulled by horses. It is not unusual to see a young boy around the age of 9, controlling a team of horses pulling him around a field on a wagon or buckboard. These wagons have wooden wheels with large spokes or thick steel wheels. The wagon wheels have to be sturdy in order to carry logs to the sawmill or hay to the barn. The Old Order Amish do not use rubber on their wheels; even the hub is wood. A metal band (steel tire rim) actually rolls on the roadway. The wheels are a lot like the western wheels shown on the covered wagons except a little bit more narrow.

Amish handmade unique gift ideas for your country western home and garden decor. Rustic horse drawn buggy wagon wheels, cannon wheels, handcrafted baskets, heavy duty barn stars, quilts, fine furniture, birdhouses, and rustic furniture for your log cabin or to decorate your primitive landscape. Countries Which Celebrate Christmas

Christmas is a Christian holiday that celebrates the birth of Jesus. This feast was created by the pope to promote Christianity and remove pagan festivals celebrated at the winter solstice.

During the 4th century, the pope decided to bring the Christmas day on December 25th.

This day has always been represented by religious ceremonies and gifts and greetings exchange.

    Here are some Christmas symbols:

    * The Advent consists of a burning candle each Sunday four weeks before December 24th; which symbolize the rebirth of light after the winter solstice.

    * The December 24th Midnight Mass; which celebrates the birth of Jesus.

    * The Christmas Crib; which symbolizes the birth of Jesus in Christian homes.

    * The Christmas tree, a symbol from the pagan celebration and representing life.

    * The Yule log; which represents the log that we put in the fireplace to warm up on December 24th Eve.

    * Santa Claus, an American creation, inspired by the Christian Saint Nicholas (celebrated in Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany and Alsace). This character wears a luxurious red cape, he has a long white beard and wears a red miter, he also holds a golden crosier. Saint Nicholas rewards good children while his companion Pere Fouettard/Black Peter punishes nasty children) and the elf Yule Goat, celebrated in Scandinavian countries.

Over the centuries, Christmas has evolved and December 24th Eve with our family, replaced the religious ceremonies.

The gift exchange: luxurious for the rich people and useful - sometimes only one orange - for the poor people, has been replaced by the modern marketing. People not only buys gifts but also spend lots of money in decoration items, food, drink...

The secularization of our society removed the true meaning of Christmas Time; which is, obviously, becoming a pagan feast.

Here are some countries which celebrate Christmas:

    Belgium:

We have a festival especially dedicated to children; which is Saint Nicholas (Sinter Klaas) on December 6th. The Great Patron of Schoolboys, who is supposed to bring candies in their shoes, brings in fact toys by the thousands to our children.

In Belgium, Nol is rather reserved for adults: the streets are decorated and illuminated, we decorate our houses, windows, gardens, trees. Belgium seems to forget that it is a Catholic country and closes more and more churches, therefore, the Midnight Mass on December 24th usually happens at 6 or 8 PM. We then eat with our family and at 12 PM we exchange our gifts. Children usually receive a book or some clothes.

Christmas Day has little meaning but practicing Catholic go to church. Belgian people visit their family on January 1st. In the Belgian Ardens, people celebrate December 31st.

    France:

Nol is dedicated to children. The streets and the houses are decorated several weeks in advance. French people have lots of Christmas customs: Christmas Markets, tree, the Christmas Dinner, Pere Noel, gifts, stories, songs, turkey, The Christmas Crib, the Yule Log, and so on. In Alsace, however, Saint Nicholas predominates on Santa Claus.

    The Netherlands:

They organize their St. Nicholas (Sinter Klaas) festival: the old bearded man traveling by boat and accompanied by many black aids, who distributes gifts to good children. Dutch people reserve the big gifts for Kerstmis Time because they profit for some great bargains after Sinter Klaas.

    Germany:

Weinhachten in Germany lasts two days. On December 26th they visit their family and their friends. Christ-Kind offers gifts to the children on December 24th families and friends. Germany has also a Saint Nicholas festival on December 6th.

    Great Britain:

This holiday is celebrated in England with enthusiasm. Children sing "Carols" in the streets, they eat the famous "Xmas Pudding" at the end their family dinner on December 25th. In England, Santa Claus fills the English children socks with gifts. British people also exchange greeting cards; which are a British creation.

    Spain:

If Santa Claus has little importance in Spain (Magi distribute gifts to children on January 6th), Spanish people decorate the streets with lights during the month of December. The windows of the shops are filled with lots of gifts and Spanish celebrate the Navidad Evening with their family.

    Portugal:

Natal Eve is a holiday. The Portuguese attend the Midnight Mass; which is the "Missa Do Galo". If there is no Christmas tree in Portugal, there is nevertheless a "Wooden Natal".

    Italy:

Natale lasts three days, from December 24th till 26th. However, Natale traditions vary from one region to another one and, depending on the region it is Babo Natale (Father Christmas) or the "Gesu Bambino" (Little Jesus) who brings gifts on December 25th. The Italian Christmas dessert is "Panettone".

    Scandinavian Countries:

During the Christmas Dinner, Scandinavian people reserve a place for the souls of the deceased members of their family. Once they finish to eat, they read the bible. The whole family is singing Christmas songs and dance around the Christmas tree.

    Other European countries:

In Romania, on December 24th, there is a Christmas candle burning until the morning of December 25th. In Russia, Christmas Day happens on January 7th, according to the Orthodox calendar. In Greece the Christmas period begins on Christmas Eve and ends at the Epiphany. Christmas is less important than Easter.

    USA:

The Saturday after Thanksgiving, Santa Claus is coming to announce the beginning of the Christmas shopping season. American people love to celebrate Christmas and set up a decorated Christmas in their home. Children hang empty stocks empty on the fireplace and on the Christmas morning they find them filled with candy and small toys.

    Canada:

Houses, shops and streets are decorated with lights. Canadian people decorate their house with a Christmas tree, a Christmas wrap, a Christmas Crib... After the "Midnight Mass" people have a Christmas Eve with their family. Turkey and the Christmas log are the essential ingredients of a Canadian Christmas Dinner. They send greeting cards to their friends and family who live far away.

    South America:

Peruvian people have Christmas parties but also learn to live better on christmas time. Their Christmas season lasts a full week. Mexican people celebrate Christmas with Las Posadas (pilgrimages representing the path by the Mary and Joseph). They celebrate the last Posada on the Christmas morning and then start the Christmas dinner. I Guatemala, immigrants have imported their German customs and the Christmas tree is essential but the Christmas gifts are reserved to the children. Gift exchange for adults is on January 1st.

    Australia:

Christmas happens during the summertime, so Australian people celebrate Christmas at the beach. People eat cold turkey and pudding.

    New Zealand:

If there are few decorations, New Zealand people organize Christmas parades and people sing in the parks. They also organize their famous "Christmas barbecue".

    Japan:

Christmas is merely commercial significance in Japan. This festival represents Saint Nicholas and it is an opportunity to offer gifts to small children.

    China:

If Christmas Day is not a holiday, Christmas is celebrated in Chinese cities. This festival was imported into this country by foreign missionaries. For the Chinese people who celebrate it, Christmas is a religious event.

    Antler Lamps and Chandeliers

Authentic antler lamps are an incredible addition to your home decor that creates the essential rustic lighting that most homes need. These hand crafted naturally shed antlers truly brings the outdoors to life in any room in your southwestern or country home. Each lamp is a unique, one-of-a-kind because of the genuine antlers that are found in spring after the deer, moose or elk have naturally shed them. If you wait too long to collect these treasures, small critters of the forest will chew on them for the calcium. Older sheds are generally more difficult to find.

Your country home decor will be complete with an antler lamp used as a table or desk lamp. The variety of styles and shapes are endless. However, you may like to have a hand crafted antler chandelier. Your kitchen decor especially, will be enhanced with this type of chandelier hung above your island. I have seen that they are beautiful hung above the dining room table to truly give an outdoor rustic look. To top off the beauty of the chandeliers, be sure to enjoy the glow from the natural rawhide chandelier shades.

Whether you choose to have leather or rawhide lamp shades, you will love the variety of shade colors. You may choose one of several colors in the pig skin leather shades as well as the rawhide laced lamp shades. Leather lamp shades have your basic color scheme colors for any home or southwestern decor. The rawhide shades are made of natural goat skin that is kept natural, bleached or dyed to create a colorful glow for your home lighting.

Log cabin decor would be missing something if it did not have a deer antler lamp as a part of its log home lighting. When you think of log cabin, you think of the outdoors, right? So definitely embrace the outdoors in your cozy home. You will find that these hand-crafted lamps are perfect for your cabin decor. You may even choose to hang a chandelier above the pool table in your lodge. These rustic lamps can be complete with pig skin leather or rawhide lamp shades, hand painted with a wildlife scene or of the many remarkable animals from the woods.

Another wonderful fact is that you may also have antler sconces to use as wall decor. These wall sconces have been beautifully made with real antler sheds mounted to a natural log plaque. Very unique in its appearance, these sconces are completed with rawhide candelabra shades. Your rustic decor will be outstanding with these one-of-a-kind pieces of art, whether it is for your lodge or a cottage in the woods.

Your western lighting will be exceptional when you have your own antler lamp. Being out west really reminds one of the memories from the early pioneer days. I am sure that along the wagon trails or during the search of a creek, they would stumble upon the natural sheds. Now, your southwestern home can be enhanced by the wall sconces or antler table lamps from genuine antlers. Who would have thought that a simple way of life would become a natural treasure for our western or country style decor needs?
