Cruising down the highway in my new Ferrari. Moving into the corner office. Opening my first off-shore account. Seeing myself on the front page of the New York Times. Walking down the beach hand-in-hand with my spouse watching our children play in the sand. If any of these images sound inviting then you're on the right track. If any of these ideas conjured motivating images of your own then you're on the right track! What ever you so desire can be in the palm of your hand. Say it, see it, receive it through your daily affirmations.
"Affirmations are for people who are out there. Affirmations are for yogis . Affirmations are for spiritual leaders. Affirmations are for...f ill in the blank ." There is certainly a spiritual side to putting your daily affirmations into play. Your spiritual component is the rush of emotion you get when you become all flushed as you conjure your dreams in hope that a higher power will drop your dream in your lap. And it's the pale complexion you see in the mirror when the feeling subsides because you doubt the possible. The rush of emotion in "the possible" is that place to which you must return to experience your dreams. We must live in the possible. That's why affirmations are for you.
Your daily affirmation is the commitment to the idea that the more you think about "what you want" (in the present tense), the more of "what you want" you will receive. Your affirmations connect you to "the possible."
Now here comes the geek squad. There is a scientific connection with your daily affirmation process called the reticular activating system (RAS). Your RAS is the section of your brain believed to be the center of arousal, motivation and awareness. It's your affirmation that activates your awareness and creates your daily motivation because you are thinking about "what you want"; and your RAS is the responsible party for placing concentrated energy on "what you want." Here's an example:
You've lived in the northern Midwest for most of your life. Springtime is gorgeous, the summers are mild but short, fall comes too soon and the long, cold winters seem to suck the life out of you by February. Your performance at work is average though your abilities far exceed your production. Your family is depressed for weeks after returning from a southern vacation. All you want to do is move to a more temperate climate so that you can enjoy your life to its fullest.
Your affirmation may read something like this, "My family and I live in a beautiful little bungalow near the Atlantic coast of South Carolina where we experience all four seasons (with a mild winter). We enjoy the fresh ocean breeze, the cool summer rains and my career is exciting as it moves along peacefully with constant, upward mobility."
As you professed your affirmation in the conscious your affirmation became rooted in your subconscious. Here are some examples of events that you wouldn't have noticed during a typical day:
- As you walk into the office, you notice a picture of a beach house on the receptionist's bulletin board.
- While waiting for the elevator you hear someone talking about their last vacation to the Carolina's.
- You're waiting for lunch at the deli, someone drops a newspaper, you bend to pick it up and the only thing you notice is a headline that reads "Experience South Carolina!"
- ...and on and on...
The commitment to reciting your affirmations many times throughout the day will continue to engage your RAS and begin to pick up all of the experiences that pertain to achieving your desired outcome. For you disbelievers, do a little research regarding the Reticular Activating System so that you can understand that there is actually a scientific motivation to embrace daily affirmations. You'll be glad you did.
